If you spend much time in the world of American Whiskey lately, you are bound to hear about American Single Malts. Where did this new type of whiskey come from, what is it, and how is it different from other whiskeys? Amanda Beckwith is the Lead Blender and Education Manager for Virginia Distillery Co, a leading producer of American Single Malts. In this episode, she answers my plethora of questions about this new category to teach us everything you could ever need to know about American Single Malt Whiskey. In addition, we run through a review of Courage and Conviction Signature Malt, the flagship whiskey from VDC.

#129: BLIND - TX vs Brothers Bond w Guest Noob Bryce
Sunday Oct 22, 2023
Sunday Oct 22, 2023
Blind tastings are by far one of the best ways to put bias aside and learn about a whiskey. TX and Brothers Bond Bourbon have both always had a banana flavor to them that I thought made them very similar - but is that actually the case? To find out, I put them side by side in this blind tasting that I walk through with recurring guest noob Bryce.

So much of what we looked at so far has been from the perspective of the bourbon loving community. Tim (@thewhiskyinfluencer) found his way into the whiskey loving community by very different means: through scotch whisky. Listen in as a bourbon drinker and a scotch drinker come together to figure out the similarities and differences in our perspective on whiskey. Of course, we also walk through a full review of Bruichladdich's Classic Laddie, and Unpeated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

#133: What Makes Bourbon So Expensive ft Blind Tasting

Why are some bourbons so expensive? Sometimes it's a quality thing, sometimes it's a marketing thing, sometimes it's both. In order to break down some of the factors that affect the cost of a whiskey, I sit down and do a blind tasting and talk about the most important aspects of a whiskey (in terms of cost drivers). Of course, I do also break down OTHER cost drivers, like packaging, marketing, the Bourbon-Bubble, etc.
The 12 whiskeys that could have been selected for this episode were: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, Wild Turkey 101, Wyoming Whiskey, Rabbit-Hole Cavehill, Bowman Brothers Small Batch, Buffalo Trace, Middle West Spirits Bourbon, Four Roses Small Batch Select, Larceny Barrel Proof, Cooper's Craft Barrel Reserve, Eagle Rare, and Weller Antique 107. If you don't want to know what I am tasting, stop reading now!
This episode features a full, in depth, blind review of Rabbit-Hole Cavehill.

#134: High Rye vs Wheated Bourbons ft Green River w Zack

Please consider checking out the Whiskey Noobs Patreon: patreon.com/whiskeynoobs
Our repeat-Guest-Noob Zack is back, and he is helping us learn a thing or two about bourbon! People always ask me about what gives different bourbons different flavors, and I almost always make sure that the mash bill is part of my answer. Specifically, how much wheat and/or rye is in it. In order to really nail down the difference between wheat and rye in a bourbon's mash bill, Zack and I walk through a blind tasting of Green River Bourbon vs Green River Wheated bourbon, which have identical mash bills except for one difference: the wheated replaces rye with wheat.
